Purchased as a puppy, his family was disheartened to discover that his high energy and extreme toy-drive was too much for them to handle. Luckily for Bear, International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), in partnership with the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC), rescued and trained Bear as a koala detection dog. Bear's not interested in hunting wildlife (prey drive), but super interested in toys (play drive), which made him an ideal candidate as a conservation dog.

Koalas are in crisis. The koala population has been devastated by habitat destruction, bushfires, and disease. In order to protect this cute, lovable creature, we need more information about them. Koalas spend up to 18 hours a day high up in trees and are extremely difficult to monitor and estimate population trends. It is critical we use rapid, accurate, and cost-effective methods to monitor the population and better understand threats so we can protect this unique species.

Dogs are faster and more effective than human spotters in finding evidence of koalas and their scat (feces). In training dogs to do this vital job, not only are koalas located more frequently and faster, but dogs like Bear get a second chance to live a life filled with satisfying work that fits their personality. Most are victims of the illegal bushmeat trade—hunters shoot down entire families of primates and send the victims to be sold in meat markets. The babies, too small to sell for meat, are sold as illicit pets. Pan Africa Sanctuary Alliance (PASA) has 22 wildlife centers located in 13 countries across Africa. In these countries, PASA members work closely with law enforcement agencies to rescue primates and give them a lifetime of loving care. However, in countries without PASA members, there are still countless baby chimps suffering from unthinkable abuse.

Until she was rescued a few weeks ago, Leila was one of these baby chimps. After her family was slaughtered for meat, she was sold as a pet and lived in a little cage. She was so desperately lonely that she broke everything in the cage, and so her owner left her chained to a platform in a city park. She was left begging all day for scraps of food from whoever happened to walk by. Little Leila however is one very lucky chimpanzee. She was found by a Journalist in Angola in a pitiful state. He arranged for Leila to be removed from the city park and transported across Angola to a woman who's already caring for a rescued baby chimpanzee. As soon as the permits, flights, and other arrangements are made, Leila will fly to Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage, a PASA member sanctuary in Zambia. Once she arrives, she will need extensive medical treatment, nutritious food, and a lot of loving care. This isolation impedes or even prevents movements by migratory species such as birds, bats, or insects, many of which are fundamental to the health of the forest. Several plant and animal species are unique to these imperiled forests—including Three-wattled Bellbirds and Resplendent Quetzals. This includes the largest remaining population of critically endangered Bornean Orangutans, the Sunda Pangolin, whose numbers have been decimated due to poaching for meat and scales, and the Helmeted Hornbill, hunted for its sought-after casque (a helmet-like structure on the bill). Deforestation of these unprotected forests continues at an alarming rate, exacerbated by the timber and oil palm industries. Until these forests are fully protected, timber harvesting will continue, resulting in further forest degradation, biodiversity losses and increased fire vulnerability.

To combat this threat, the government of Sabah in Borneo has pledged to increase the extent of its protected areas from the current 23 percent to 30 percent, safeguarding 920,000 acres of Bornean rainforest over the next four years. To implement this initiative, the Sabah government has urgently requested high quality analysis on where to strategically create these new protected areas. Rainforest Trust is collaborating with a local partner to generate high-resolution maps that integrate land use with biodiversity information. Data collected from decades of field research and aerial surveys in 2015 will help determine biodiversity levels and land values. These maps will be integrated with information regarding existing forest protection, threats and un-allocated land parcels to generate a new network of protected areas, taking into account the critical need for forest habitat connectivity.
