3D-Printed Medical Devices on Stuffed Animals Bring Joy to Children's Healthcare Journeys
In Durand, Illinois, a heartwarming initiative is changing lives, one stuffed animal at a time.
Carolyn Robbins, the brainchild behind this project, has created a unique approach to comfort and support for children with medical needs. Her business, WC (World’s Coolest) Build a Buddy, teams up with a UK collaborator to produce 'Battle Buddies'—stuffed animals equipped with 3D-printed medical devices mirroring those used by children with health conditions.
“These kids are on a journey and it’s not the easiest for them and their families to be on," Robbins told WIFR.

Empathy in Every Stitch

Robbins started WC Build a Buddy in 2020. Her mission extends beyond mere toy production. These custom-made companions, which she also refers to as plush pals, are designed to mirror their owners, including the medical devices they use, such as hearing aids or orthopedic boots.
This level of personalization fosters a sense of normalcy and companionship for the children

A Global Effort for Local Smiles

The UK partner in this endeavor plays a crucial role by crafting and shipping the 3D-printed devices to Robbins. Since April 2023, their collaboration has brought joy to over 100 children and their families. Robbins's initiative has gained attention, including from Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi, who received a vibrating-hand Battle Buddy to represent his experience with Tourettes WIFR reports.

Accessibility and Affordability

Robbins ensures that the cost of these special stuffed animals remains the same, regardless of the addition of medical devices. This approach allows families of all financial backgrounds to access these comforting toys. A fundraising campaign supports this cause, providing Battle Buddies to families unable to afford them. The fundraiser reflects Robbins's vision to make these therapeutic toys accessible to every child in need.

More Than Just Toys

These Battle Buddies are not just toys; they are symbols of resilience and support. Parents have shared stories of how these stuffed animals have eased the challenges of daily medical routines for their children, which are posted on the WC Build a Buddy website.
The emotional impact of seeing a toy that shares their medical journey is profound, both for the children and their families.

Expanding Impact

With over 300 requests for Battle Buddies in the USA, Robbins's project is rapidly expanding. Each Battle Buddy, including the 3D-printed medical devices, costs $25, and the growing demand and positive feedback are testimonies to the project's success and the need for such empathetic initiatives in healthcare.

Conclusion: A Mission of Joy and Empathy

Carolyn Robbins's WC Build a Buddy and her creation of Battle Buddies illustrate the power of empathy and innovation in providing comfort to children facing medical challenges. Her work exemplifies how a simple idea can blossom into a movement, bringing smiles and support to young heroes battling health conditions.
As this initiative continues to grow, it stands as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the difference one person's compassion can make in the lives of many.
