In July, Massachusetts became the first state to ban devocalization of dogs and cats thanks to the efforts of the Coalition to Protect and Rescue Pets, an unfunded network of caring individuals joined by animal shelters and rescue groups statewide. These determined volunteers won their victory for animals through the passage of Logan's Law to prevent this cruel surgery, which is usually ordered by irresponsible breeders and others who keep large numbers of dogs or cats for profit or hobby.

Devocalization surgery cuts the vocal cords to suppress a dog's or cat's voice.
