This 1,172-mile long pipeline will transport 570,000 barrels of crude oil per day. But it could also harm everything in its path
Slated to be fully functional within months, the Dakota Access Pipeline is projected to transport 570,000 barrels of crude oil each day, from northwest North Dakota, to south central Illinois, spanning 1,172 miles in all. Within and along those 1,172 miles is farmland. And forests. And rivers.
**And life.**
The Standing Rock Reservation is home to the Standing Rock Sioux tribe, and is situated in Fort Yates, North Dakota, within one mile from what has for centuries been their sole source of water: the Missouri River. Soon, the Dakota Access Pipeline will run through the Missouri River, where, even without a mishap, the pipeline, as we’ve seen with pipelines before, will leak oil and taint the water supply, dooming sacred Standing Rock Sioux sites, but also the web of life the river supports. Drinking water will become toxic. Fish, animals, and plants will suffocate. Soil in which to plant and grow crops will be unusable.
Life near the Missouri River will become drastically harder.
It is for the aforementioned reasons that the tribe protests the pipeline's construction, and is suing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who in July 2016, without proper consultation of the tribe, carelessly gave the go ahead to begin construction on the pipeline.
The decision regarding that suit and whether or not construction will continue as planned will be handed down on or before September 9th, 2016, by Judge James E. Boasberg. Between now and then we must do everything in our power to ensure that the voices of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe are heard—that their culture will not be destroyed, and that the Missouri River will not turn into an oil bed.
