Child sexual abuse can happen in many forms, and it isn't always apparent. Many times, abusive individuals will go to great lengths to make sure their abuse can't be detected by authority figures. Other times, children are embarrassed or scared to talk about it. For whatever the reason, child abuse can often be a hidden tragedy.

That's why it's necessary that teachers are trained to recognize signs of sexual abuse and on how to approach these delicate situations. Some common behavioral symptoms are sudden changes in behavior or performance in school, easy agitation, learning problems, lack of desire to go home. There are others signs that can be indicative of abuse but may not be initially apparent.

We need to petition Congress to require a federal program to train teachers on how to approach these sensitive situations.
