President Obama has continuously committed himself to combating HIV and AIDS. But while strides have been made, millions of people are still infected each year — many of them children and babies.

Without treatment, an estimated 1/2 of HIV-positive infants die before their second birthday.

This doesn't have to happen. When a mother has access to antiretroviral therapy, the chance of HIV transmission is less than 5%.

**Prevention of mother-to-child-transmission (PMTCT) is the most effective way to create an HIV-free generation.** PMTCT provides drugs, counseling, and psychological support to help mothers safeguard their infants against the virus.
