UNICEF's PMTCT program is making great strides toward eliminating mother-to-child HIV transmission. Show your support!
Every day over 1,000 babies are infected with HIV/AIDS through transmission from their mother — during pregnancy, labor and delivery, and breastfeeding.
But when a mother has access to antiretroviral therapy, the chance of HIV transmission is reduced significantly. Prevention of mother-to-child-transmission (PMTCT) is the most effective way to create an HIV-free generation.
UNICEF has developed the Mother-Baby-Pack, a take-home box of PMTCT drugs for women who have no access to conventional care. The pack contains antiretroviral drugs and antibiotics required to protect the health of a mother and child, and the medicines can be administered at home. The Mother-Baby-Pack has been launched in Kenya, and will be made available in Cameroon, Lesotho, and Zambia by mid-2011.
