Animals in need are found in every community. The cities of Tamaqua and Pottsville, Pennsylvania have been especially hit hard where the backlog of suspected animal cruelty and neglect has grown exponentially. Two caring and compassionate volunteers are making a huge difference by helping animals who are being hurt, neglected, and have no voice in their area.

Humane Officers Sue Schafer from Tamaqua Area Animal Rescue and Janine Choplick from Hillside SPCA Pottsville, spend their personal time to dig away at the backlog of complaints. Working together for the past two years, they've rescued a plethora of both domestic and wild animals and made sure to get them out of harm's way.

They spend their weekends working closely with police officials, strategizing their investigations, and following up on complaints. Choplick and Schafer's goal is not to file charges on all of the suspected pet owners, but to educate them and give them a chance to better care for their pets. They then regularly check back to make sure the owner has followed through. They don't do it to punish people, they do it to save animals.

"They trust us to do the right thing for them," Choplick tells The Republic Herald about the animals they visit. "We just get them out of harm's way," Schafer adds.
