Angel is a three-year-old shepherd mix. She and her sisters, Coco and Stormy, were chained up for most of their lives in a mud pit near Huston, Texas. Local rescuers worked for over a year to secure the dogs' release from the people who kept them in such horrid conditions. Even after agreeing to the release, the ex-guardians showed no remorse for the life they'd forced these girls to lead. To them, Angel was a possession, not a dog who could feel joy or pain, or who could suffer.

Painter Elizabeth Ellis heard Angel's story after the rescuers transported all three dogs to the Good Newz Rehab Center for Chained and Penned dogs in Smithfield, Virginia. There, they and others like them receive long-awaited medical care and attention. Angel joined a number of shelter animals across the U.S. that became an inspiration for Ellis, whose love for animals and talent for painting led her to come up with an innovative way to help them find forever homes.

Ellis calls 2015 The Year of 52 Rescues, and is working on a series of watercolor paintings by that name. Each week for the entire year, she will feature one adoptable pet in an original portrait on her blog and Facebook page. "The more people I reach, the more animals I can help," said Ellis. "I will be mailing the original paintings to the shelters where the animals are still living, or hopefully, the family that has adopted the animal."

Ellis is still seeking for more adoptable pets so check out the "More About This Issue" section to learn how you can help!

**Let’s give a big thanks to Elizabeth Ellis for creatively putting the spotlight on pets like Angel, who hope and deserve to find a family who will love them!**
