Collection: Fly Heartworm Positive Dogs at Risk of Euthanasia to Freedom

If you are a heartworm positive dog in an overcrowded shelter in the South, your chances of making it out of the shelter are slim.

The Sad Situation

Several states in the southern U.S. make up over half of the euthanasia rates for pets in the whole country, with Louisiana having the highest rate. Due to lack of resources, including resources for healthcare costs, some shelters will euthanize the pets they cannot take care of properly. If a dog is diagnosed with heartworm disease the chances for them making it to a forever family are slim to none.

According to the American Heartworm Society, Louisiana is one of the leading states in heartworm infection rates in this country, putting heartworm positive shelter dogs at a higher risk of euthanasia due to length of care, space required, and the prohibitive cost of treatment.

Heartworm Takes Its Toll

Heartworm disease is a life-threatening illness that is transmitted from mosquitos to pets. Heartworm primarily affects the heart and lungs of the pet. However, heartworm disease can be cured when identified, and treated properly. When supporting this flight, dogs that are suffering from heartworm disease, are cared for before they board their flight, ensuring that affected dogs and healthy dogs get to their destination safely.

We want to give these dogs a second chance at a happy life. That’s why Greater Good Charities’ Good Flights program announced our inaugural Save a Heartmission with two flights on April 19th and 20th, that saved more than 100 at-risk shelter dogs from seven shelters in the south.

Shelter staff and volunteers work hard to ensure that pets are comfortable in their crates and loaded safely onto the plane. They are also there to help offload crates, and get each animal into the new shelter where they will stay until they move to their forever home. Due to the amount of flights that are conducted and the number of animals being transported, supplies are always in need.
