Give Dogs a Ride to Rescue

According to the Humane Society of the United States, between 6 and 8 million dogs and cats are left at shelters each year. Many shelters experience much higher intake of pets than others, leading to euthanasia of healthy adoptable animals due to lack of funding, space, and local families willing to adopt. Animal Lifeline has created a Ride to Rescue program to help transport dogs and cats from overly crowded shelters to shelters where they have a better chance of being adopted free of charge to accepting rescues and shelter partners.

Rescuing these pets can be complicated and costly. Upon intake, animals must first be examined by a veterinarian and be in good health. Then they vaccinated, dewormed, and treated, with puppies requiring extra care vaccinations. All animals processed are also given a behavioral evaluation. Each animal typically needs its own shipping crate. The vehicle used for transportation must be kept clean and disinfected, with proper ventilation and climate control. And, of course rescue partners must be carefully screened to ensure safe outcomes for all the animals. Animal Lifeline is sponsoring free rides for pets in high intake shelters and giving them safe passage to save theirs lives.
