Rescue Sumatran Orangutans

As Sumatra rapidly trades their rainforests for farmlands, the orangutans who call these forests home are losing habitat critical to their survival. Today there are less than 6,600 orangutans left in the wild, stranded in isolated patches of forest surrounded by plantations.

Left with few food options to survive, Sumatran orangutans are turning to the crops farmers rely on for income, raiding and damaging them to supplement their diet. Stripped of their protection by the forest, these orangutans face greater exposure to hunting and poaching for the illegal pet trade.

The Sumatran Orangutan Society is helping rescue orangutans being illegally kept as pets, or who are stranded in farmlands, by relocating them to safer forests they can call home. Recently, they rescued an Orangutan named Pongky, who was held captive first by police officials as a pet, and then in a zoo. He is now at an SOC care center where he is being prepared for reintroduction to the wild and will soon be back home.

You can help! Your donation will help fund tranquilizer darts to safely evacuate orangutans from areas being cleared by bulldozers as well as supply veterinary supplies needed to treat them out in the field.

The Sumatran Orangutan Society (SOS) works to protect orangutans, their forests and their future. We support frontline conservation programs and campaign on issues threatening the survival of orangutans in the wild. Our projects include rainforest restoration, and developing community conservation initiatives which support the protection of the Leuser forests, empowering local people to become guardians of this precious ecosystem.
