According to the World Health Organization, approximately 500,000 people die each year from malaria. Sadly, children younger than five years old are the main victims. Less than 10% of children sleep under protective nets in Sierra Leone, where malaria is still a frequent and killer disease. Malaria causes unnecessary sickness, hospitalization and deaths, which could easily be prevented.

Insecticide-treated bed nets provide an effective barrier and protection from mosquito bites. Increased control and prevention measures like bed nets has led to a 60% reduction in malaria mortality rates globally since 2000. Develop Africa has developed a program to distribute bed nets to families and training them on the importance of their you. As a result of these interventions, families have shown to be in better health and are living longer.

Donors like you helped provide more life-saving mosquito nets. The long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) provide an effective barrier and protection from mosquito bites. They are a form of personal protection that has been shown to reduce malaria illness, severe disease, and death due to malaria in endemic regions. One of the recipients of a net was Baba. Baba is a young boy living alone at the moment - his mother is being treated at the Lumley Health Center for malaria. Because of this, he was supplied with a mosquito tent so that he will not be affected by malaria as well. He was excited to receive the net as he knows this will keep him safe from malaria.
