Service Dogs for American Veterans!

Help train and provide service dogs of the highest quality, at no cost to disabled American veterans in order to help restore their physical and emotional independence.

American Soldiers are coming home in greater numbers than in previous wars because of the improvements in body armor. Although the number of survivors has increased, they are coming back with more life-changing injuries and disabilities. This includes invisible injuries like PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Over 400,000 veterans have been diagnosed with PTSD or TBI since 2001. We are losing these American Heroes at the rate of 22 per day to suicide. Our goal is to cut down on the number of suicides by assisting disabled veterans in regaining their emotional and physical independence and confidence by providing them with a service dog. GreaterGood.org is working with Patriot PAWS Service Dogs that specialize in training rescued dogs to provide services for Veterans with mental health issues. 3.9 million dogs enter animal shelters per year. Of those 3.9 million dogs, 1.2 million are euthanized. We are able to work with partners to identify dogs and pull them out of shelters and into our program. Dogs that do not end up meeting training goals for therapy purposes are adopted into loving homes.

It takes 2 to 2.5 years to train a full mobility service dog. However, PTSD dogs can be trained in approximately half that time. This will help us to place more dogs with more veterans. Thus, saving lives of more veterans and dogs alike. It is reported that nearly 30% of our military men and women will suffer from PTSD without any other injury or disability. These veterans cannot escape the horrors of war because of the overwhelming anxiety that follows them home. They also battle the difficulty of having injuries that cannot be seen by others. What people cannot see, they do not understand even though it is very real and traumatic to the injured party. A dog's gentle spirit that touches one's soul can provide companionship and comfort for veterans that no one else understands. This companionship offers the security and confidence that is needed to thrust them back into society and learning to live in the civilian world.
