Madrean Discovery: Teach Students about the Sky Islands!

Inspire the next generation of students through hands-on environmental education!

The Madrean Archipelago (or Sky Island Mountain Range), a series of unique ecosystems that range from New Mexico and Arizona to Mexico, is one of our world's global biodiversity hotspots. Yet most residents of the smaller towns in the region have never been in the Sky Islands and have little knowledge of the animals, plants, vegetation, or ecology.

That's why the Madrean Discovery Expeditions program is dedicated to educating local students about the natural history and amazing plants and animals living right in their backyard. The future of the environment begins with the education of today's youth and their understanding of the natural environment in which they live.

You can help the youngest generation of Sonoran residents to grow up to be more informed and engaged residents, parents, and teachers.

Update from the Field

April 2016

The first Sky Island Environmental Education Experience was a complete success. Environmental education specialists visited five rural middle schools and reached a total of 221 students and 18 teachers. The students were captivated by the biodiversity presentation and enthusiastically engaged in the various activities. Each school was left with natural history of Sonora booklets, hummingbird feeders, seeds for butterfly gardens, and bird field guides. This was the first time that any of the schools had environmental education presentations from visitors, and they are excited for more.
