Help provide clean water for school children in South Sudan.

Unsafe water kills 200 children every hour across our globe. In South Sudan, only 2% of the population has access to piped water on premises. The burden of not having access to clean water is largely placed upon women and girls who have to walk miles to collect water. In just one day, 200 million work hours are consumed by women and girls around the world collecting water for their families.

Your contribution to support clean water for the Zogolona Primary School in Wau County, South Sudan can change this! 100% of funds you contribute go towards building AND maintaining water well at this primary school which will serve OVER 1,000 CHILDREN. Our goal is to raise the money by June 30, 2018 so that the team can include this well in its 2019 drilling season.

You can help. Just $13.72 provides 53,550 liters of clean water for the entire school community.

Update from the Field

May 2018

WFSS Ground Breaking

In January, Water for South Sudan broke ground on a pilot sanitation project at the Zogolona Primary School (pictured above). YOUR donations have helped Water for South Sudan install a well and six latrines at the school! This has impacted 800 students and 20 teachers at the school! Before the installation of the latrines, students had to walk up to 30 minutes away from the school in order to find a safe place to urinate. Girls would stay home from school while menstruating because they didn't have any sanitation facilities on site. This put students at a great disadvantage, taking valuable time away from their education. Now that Zogolona Primary School has sanitation facilities on-site, students will no longer miss up to an hour of class time due to their normal bodily functions. WFSS Ground Breaking Your donations have helped build four stalls for girls and two stalls for boys, but Water for South Sudan needs to build 11 more stalls for girls and seven more stalls for boys in order to meet the UN sanitation guidelines. With your help, we hope to build another well as well as more latrines on-site at Zogolona Primary School.

One of the students your donations have helped is Ajok (pictured to the right). Ajok is in 7th grade at Zogolona Primary School. Before the installation of the new well and latrines, Ajok would walk 30 minutes to find clean drinking water and 40 minutes to find a bush to urinate behind, like most students. Ajok also missed a week of school every month due to menstruation. Because of this, Ajok was in danger of falling behind in her lessons. Having access to fresh drinking water and a clean latrine has helped keep Ajok stay in class and allow her to pursue her education. "I am very excited and grateful to have water to drink and latrines at school. Thank you for supporting us," Ajok said.

The founder of Water for South Sudan, Salva, was one of the "lost boys" of Sudan. When Salva was 12 he began his incredible journey alone and on foot across multiple countries in search of refuge. Eventually he ended up in a refugee camp and was offered an opportunity to go to the U.S. as one of "the lost boys" of Sudan, where he has lived for 20 years now. A few years ago he returned to South Sudan to be reunited with his father who was dying of a waterborne illness. Upon return to back to the U.S. he started Water for South Sudan and to date have built AND maintained 304 wells and provided clean water for over 304,000 people.
