Throughout Asia, an estimated 30 million dogs a year are killed and consumed in the dog meat trade. South Korea differs from all other Asian countries where dog meat is prevalent: it is the only country in the world known to have established intensive dog breeding farms solely for the meat trade. The farms are throughout the peninsula, ranging in size from small 'backyard' enterprises housing approximately 20 dogs to large-scale operations housing thousands of dogs. It is estimated that 2-2.5 million dogs were slaughtered for human consumption in South Korea in 2014, raised on thousands of farms. The dogs endure neglect and cruelty throughout their short lives, existing in barren, metal cages while exposed to all of the elements and being given just enough food to survive.

Humane Society International (HSI) has been active in South Korea since 2014, bringing attention to the cruelty of the dog meat industry. Since January 2015, HSI has permanently closed down nine farms, rescuing nearly 1,000 dogs on the farms and transporting the dogs to their adoptions into loving homes in the U.S., UK, and Canada. HSI's goal is to gain the public and political support needed to ban the sale and consumption of dog meat in S. Korea while rescuing dogs currently imprisoned in these farms.
