The mission of Big Sky Ranch/CATNIP Foundation is changing the ways we think and feel about living with and caring for animals. Everything we do is aimed at lowering the number of animals entering shelters and the ones being killed there. We are the largest provider of programs aimed at shelter diversion, including providing low-cost spay/neuter services for about 175 animals per week, as well as pulling animals out of municipal shelters and providing the medical care they need to become healthy, adoptable pets. In 2020 we placed over 2000 animals in loving homes through our adoption programs, which emphasize the placement of animals who might be deemed “unadoptable” at open admission shelters, and we have travelled 50,000 miles to transport animals to out-of-state rescue partner organizations who help them find loving, forever homes. After nearly a decade in the trenches, we can see a direct relationship between the high rate of shelter deaths in Louisiana and the complete lack of affordable veterinary care options within financial reach of families in impoverished areas. Earlier this year, we opened a low-cost spay/neuter and affordable care community clinic at a 6,000 sq. ft. facility that also houses the first Louisiana cat adoption cafe of its kind. Our expanded clinic has been providing, high quality, high-volume/low-cost spay and neuter services and affordable veterinary care to a region where resources are sorely lacking. Our biggest challenge is the overwhelming number of animals needing medical attention. Because there are so few options available for animals in need right now, we are experiencing a huge spike in requests for assistance from outside our typical service area. In fact, we are functioning as a de facto emergency room for indigent animals all over the state, from Texas to Mississippi. The opportunity for an alternative positive outcome for these animals is almost non-existent. The medical needs alone we are faced with are overwhelming, but the requests for help with spay neuter must be addressed on a much larger scale than what can be achieved with daily surgery schedules. Our primary fundraising goal is to support these needs.

Greater Good Charities and The Animal Rescue Site are joining NBC and Telemundo stations’ Clear The Shelters pet adoption campaign to support shelters and rescues across the country by encouraging individuals to donate funds to help animal welfare groups with the most critical needs.
